Main repertoire
Alexander Malkus’ concert repertoire comprises a large number of music pieces of different epochs and styles ranging from old masters’ music to modern avanguard music.
The formation of the musician’s personality was largely impacted by traditions of the school of the outstanding composer, piano-player and teacher S.E. Feinberg whose follower V.A. Nathanson was.
Focus on education, especially in the field of Russian musical culture, is an important feature of the piano-player’s performance. He prepared and successfully performed in Moscow the monumental cycle “The selected Russian piano music of the XIX-XX centuries” consisting of five concert programs.
Cooperation with the outstanding modern composer R.K. Shchedrin occupies an important place in Alexander Malkus’ musical performance. The piano-player recurrently participated in the composer’s recitals in Moscow and Paris playing a grandiose “Polyphonic Notebook” cycle and pieces.
Concert activity
The piano-player gave performance on tours to many countries - Russia, former USSR, Czechia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Sweden, Austria, Italy, France, Germany, UK and Japan. He successfully played music in such prestigious halls as Dvořák Hall in Prague, Mozart Hall in Frankfurt, Cologne Philharmonic Hall in Cologne, Verdi Hall in Milan and Casals Hall in Tokyo.
He also participated in a variety of European music festivals - Frankfurt Feste 92 (Germany), Melos-ETHOS 93 (Slovakia), Musicarte Festa Internazionale della Musica da Camera 92, 93, 94 (Italy), Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus 96 (Austria), Cambridge Summer Recitals 96, Modern Music Festival 97 in Odessa; Bonner Herbst 97 (Germany); XII Segni Barocchi Festival of Old Music 2001 (Italy); X International Festival “St. Petersburg Palaces” 2002; the twelth salon des Arts in Sofia; 2007 Varna Summer (Bulgaria).
Well-known musicians acted as A. Malkus’ partners – the conductors N. Rakhlin and A. Dmitriev, violinists T. Grindenko and P. Minev (Bulgaria) and cello-players M. Tchaikovskaya I. Gavrysh and A. Krystev (Bulgaria).
In recent years A. Malkus presented interesting programs reflecting his explorations and research in the area of musical links and succession of styles such as D. Field - F. Chopin - M. Glinka at the State Skryabin Museum and the International Centre and Museum of the Rerich Family (2002) and Night of Romantic Music D. Field - F. Chopin, A. Lyadov – A. Skryabin at the State Skryabin Museum (2002).
Currently the musician is actively involved in the projects connected with the Russian piano music of the Silvery Century, Russian first-wave avanguard music and music of the Russian overseas community in the first half of the XX century.
